Shark’s Head press release, March 2022.

Shark’s Head is proud to introduce a new remote access system to your boat via the Internet. “There are very few solutions on the market that allow the skipper to access his boat’s electronics system as if he were on-board”, says Graeme Elsworthy, the lead software developer of this new solution. “We can now fill this gap with a cost-efficient, reliable and easy to use solution.”

The installation and setup is very easy: The SharksHead central module is connected to a 3G or 4G wifi modem that the user can provide himself. Then he or she signs up with the new online service via our web portal and clicks a button on his SharksHead web interface.

From now on, as long as the boat’s Internet modem has reception, he can reach it from any web browser in the world and has full access to all features. If the boat is off-shore he can still access it through his on board wifi access point or directly to the SharksHead central module, no Internet is required there.

The whole system is encrypted and authenticated and has been reviewed by an experienced IT security professional.

In addition to remote access, this service can send alerts via SMS or Email to proactively notify the relevant people if something is not right. Most commonly, this is used for high water alarms in the bilge or if an unauthorised person has entered the boat.

“There were a few hurdles to take in the development of this solution, which might explain why it’s not part and parcel with our competitor’s offerings” concludes Graeme.
